  1. So, and now this is just a guess, I think you put a piece of glass over the photographic paper under the enlarger, then cover the glass with sand. Project down the negative and clear the sand away where you want it to expose. (note finger trail right tent pole) Again just guessing based on how I would do it if someone hired me to. Very nice effect.

  2. I had to take a closer look to make sure because I used a warping tool to crop the image in slightly overdeveloped spots. Yes, I think you're right - finger trails.
    It is a neat effect - sort of that blown-out over-exposed look surrounding the properly exposed focal point.
