Realism

Painting by Richard Estes

  1. At first glance I thought a couple was getting busy in the third booth, but I can't see any extra hands or legs. Wishful thinking I guess.

Pretty cool for paint. For a few moments I thought it was a photo.

  2. Most people think it's a photo at first. Estes is one, if not the best photo realism painter.

But basically it's like painting by numbers. You take a photo, develop it as a slide, project it onto the canvas and fill it in.

I should have added a couple gettin' busy somewhere in there.

  3. These (Photorealism works) really need to be viewed in person to be truly appreciated and see the surface detail and size. It's nice to see them on-line but an Internet pic of a scan of a photo of a painting of a photo of a real scene? That's a lot of levels. I like Audrey Flack's work it reminds me of drugs

  4. Drugs... ahhhhh.
    Yes, Flack's work is cool.
Some of the paintings of Estes that I've seen in person were surprisingly small compared to what I had expected. Others blew me away.

  5. Lol- the best quote I've ever been able to use - "It's nice to see them on-line but an Internet pic of a scan of a photo of a painting of a photo of a real scene?"

  6. I'm almost sure I saw that one at the Thyssen Bosemiza in Madrid a few years ago.
